Why Choose Alajuela?|Living in Costa Rica

Staying in the central valley and only a few miles from San Jose, we find Alajuela. The city is popular with expats with its closeness to the largest airport in Costa Rica and for the fact, it does not have the hustle and bustle of the larger San Jose. Also known as the “City of Mangoes”, its climate is similar to other areas of the central valley and varies between 65F and 85F.

Cost of living– A single person can make it work for around $1500 dollars a month if they watch their spending. A couple can do the same for around $2000 a month. Your cost of living from that point will rely on your spending habits and how many imported items you will need.

Things to do–Alajuela’s Central Park if lined with Mango and Palm trees, making it pleasant for a stroll in the areas beautiful weather. Another nice park is the Juan Santamaria Park who’s namesake was the hero of a 19th century invader led by an adventurer from the U.S. who attempted to take over control of the area. If you need more nature, take a trip to the Butterfly Farm or Botanical Orchid Garden, both of which are just outside the city. For the ultimate day trip though, take the 22 mile journey to Poas Volcano National Park where the rocks are alive.

If you wish to have a slightly more toned down life than San Jose then Alajuela may be for you. Its closeness to the airport make it a viable and popular place for expats
