Why Choose Ambergris Caye|Living in Belize

Ambergris Caye has been one of the top destinations for expats and vacationers alike for many years now. Sitting just off the mainland it is about a 90 minute jaunt by boat or a quick flight by puddle jumper.

In years past, it was easy to find a rental or house for sale at really affordable prices. That time has passed. The island is still a major destination for expats and new construction persists, but simple supply and demand has increased prices in recent years. That is not to say deals cannot be found and when compared to places in Europe or the U.S. it can still be a bargain. Don’t expect to live on the island only on your social security check though.

Cost of Living

In years past, it was easy to find a rental or house for sale at really affordable prices. That time has passed. The island is still a major destination for expats and new construction persists, but simple supply and demand has increased prices in recent years. That is not to say deals cannot be found and when compared to places in Europe or the U.S. it can still be a bargain. Don’t expect to live on the island only on your social security check though.

Being an island, everything is flown or shipped in from the mainland. This can add to the cost, not just on imported products, but also local Belizian products. The fact that it is a tourist area would suggest that it can definitely be more expensive than the mainland. You will need at least $3000 plus a month to get by here.

Things to do

Catering to the tourist, Ambergris Caye has several resorts and all the things that come with them. Excursions to the mainland, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, fishing and boating are the main attractions. The town of San Pedro sits on the island and is full of shopping, restaurants and bars.

In Conclusion

Ambergris Caye is a beautiful place full of friendly people. I would live there in a second if the cost of living were more in my favor. If you have a decent nest egg and can afford to purchase some of the new construction on the island then this may be your spot.
